On a crisp clear day with temperatures at about freezing we had a record day at Clay Bank East. With 170 runners this was easily the biggest field we have ever had at this event. This makes three events in a row where attendance has been a record. The going was excellent apart from a bit of slippery ice and in the Women's race there was a good contest between Fiona Blackett and Katie Rawnsley. They were in that order as they came to the half way point on the climb to Round Hill. Fiona had about a 20 second lead but pushed on on this climb. From this point both women went away from the field with Fiona smashing the existing record and Katie just seconds outside. In the Men's event it was an even closer contest between Phil Sanderson and Cameron Taylor. Observers on the course reported that they were nip and tuck for the whole way with the lead changing fairly regularly. At the finish it was an 'eye balls out' contest with Phil just a finger tip ahead of Cameron. Both were recorded as the same time and Phil would have been quite happy for it to have been called a dead heat! In the event they were both a few seconds outside Andy Hilton's record. In the men's team Durham Fell Runners led by Ian McGrath packed brilliantly in 4,5,6 & 11 to hold off strong Pudsey and Esk Valley Teams. In the women's team Pickering were the winners led by Kim England, from Scarborough, New Marske and Durham. Don't forget the change of venue at The Danby Beacon...
